She was many things during her lifetime - the people's princess, a global fashion idol, a known charitable figure, and at times, a painful mirror of the imperfect life of royalty.

Now, the life of one of the most adored members of the British royal family comes to the big screen via the biopic Diana which stars Hollywood actress Naomi Watts.

The new trailer is big on imagery and teases on the last few years of Princess Diana's life. From red carpet appearances and designer ball gowns, to grand European vacations on yachts and the constant onslaught of paparazzi, the biopic presents the princess's last years in an exciting visual feast.

It also tackles the years before Diana's death where she became active campaigning for the eradication of land mines; and her eventual search for new love away from Buckingham palace following her divorce from Prince Charles, including her romance with Dr. Hasnat Khan (played by Naveen Andrews). Diana died in August 1997 after a fatal car accident in a tunnel in Paris.

The teaser shows the initial product of the production's labour, particularly Watts who took the extra length to imitate Diana's look from her short layered hairstyle, spiked eyelashes, and shy trademark smile. Watts likewise appears to have imbibed Diana's warmth and genuine personality that earned her the title "Princess of Hearts."

In an interview with The Times last year, Watts admitted that she was terrified at the beginning to play Diana in a movie. She said the challenge was to create a flawless presentation of the princess' most iconic looks without turning the performance into a flimsy form of mimicry.

During filming, she was also pressured by a delayed shooting schedule due to a leg injury that Andrews sustained during production.

"It's like being terrified all over again. Nothing measures up to that kind of pressure," Watts said in October.

Watts has played real women in films before including her role as CIA agent Valerie Plame in the movie "Fair Game" and as Maria in the tragedy film "The Impossible." But she says none has been more closely followed and popular than her role as Princess Diana.

The movie is directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel.
