Actor Johnny Depp filed a defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard

Johnny Depp may have been in the news these last few years after being defamed by his ex-wife, Amber Heard, but the actor is one of the most successful and established figures in Hollywood.

One of his noteworthy skills is how Depp completely transforms his look to fit the persona of the character he plays on the big screen.

Check out the list of top five get-ups that left a mark on his fans.

1. Mad Hatter

Depp had to apply tons of makeup and use CGI to transform into the role of Mad Hatter in 2010's fantasy drama, "Alice in Wonderland." Make-up artists Valli O’Reilly and Patty York, hairstylist Terry Baliel and costume designer Colleen Atwood helped put this eye-catching look together.

2. Gellert Grindelwald

The 59-year-old actor played Gellert Grindelwald's character in the 2018 movie, "Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald." Depp portrayed a dark wizard of the wizarding world who despised muggles, or people who lacked magical powers, in the movie "Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald," a spin-off of the Harry Potter book series.

According to multiple sources, it was Depp's idea to dye his hair and wear colored contact lense in his right eye, and fans would agree this choice elevated Grindelwald's character and tied his villainous persona together.

3. Captain Jack Sparrow

Talking about Depp's career without mentioning his most iconic character, Captain Jack Sparrow is impossible. The actor played this character in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie franchise for over two decades. The performance also earned Depp an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2003 for the first installment, "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

4. Edward Scissorhands

Depp played the title character in the movie, "Edward Scissorhands," which was released in 1990. Make-up artists Stan Winston and Ve Neill were nominated for the Best Make-up Academy Award for their work. Winston and Neill used skin-tight suits for the actor to get Depp to play a humanoid with hands made up of scissors instead of fingers.

5. Willy Wonka

Another iconic look that made Depp almost unrecognizable, for both his get-up and his brilliant acting skills. The actor played Willy Wonka in the 2005 movie, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." He donned purple contact lenses and with help of his make-up team, he got flawless pale skin for the role. He also used fake teeth for improving his character's look.

Some of Depp’s more notable characters are Big Bad Wolf from the movie "Into the Woods," James ‘Whitey’ Bulger from "Black Mass," Barnabas Collins from "Dark Shadows," Sweeney Todd from "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" and Tonto from "The Lone Ranger."
