India has become the largest ammunition importer in Asia with massive expenditures in strengthening its military power.

Motivated by China's military "threat," India has since aimed at expanding its military prowess, which is seen by the international community as "suspicious" because it fails to uplift its own economy resulting in an "unbalanced" manner of progress, according to reports.

Since 2010, its military build-up gears towards becoming a "global power" with US$5 billion spent in procuring military aircrafts, warships and jet fighters from Russia. Its successful pursuit of developing its own stealth frigate "INS Satpura" which began operating on August 20, 2011 and "INS Sahyadri" in 2012 has gained the country the unique reputation of being one of the few that can construct the said weaponry, China's People's Daily reported.

Gathered reports from AP and AFP said that by 2012, India's US$30-billion military budget will enable the country to own sophisticated air defense with jet fighters, aircraft carriers, ship-borne weapons; and land defense with anti-tank missiles and battle tanks. In addition to purchased missiles, India also successfully developed its own strategic missiles, the "Agni," which has the target range from 700 to 3,500 kilometers.

Political analysts maintain, however, that with the rate India is expanding its military capability, it still cannot become a leader in Asia because economic strength and military power go hand-in-hand. An extreme imbalanced military power poses suspicions to other Asian neighboring countries which would like to maintain that relations between India and Pakistan remain normal.
