At least $16 million may be disbursed this month by the Federal Government to boost its campaign for the national broadband network (NBN).

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy told media on Wednesday that the government plans to promote NBN before it starts its operations in Tasmania this July.

Senator Conroy was in Hobart yesterday for the opening of the first network operations center that will help connect Tasmanian customers to register for the scheme in Midway Point, Scottsdale, and Smithton.

Senator Conroy added that a public education campaign is needed to clear up misunderstandings when queries arrive from the customers. The movement is now being evaluated by the independent communications commission.

"This is a campaign to educate Australians about what the national broadband network is about and can do," he said.

"I mean let me be very clear, everywhere we go people are asking, 'how is this going to affect us? How is this going to change our lives?'"

The Government has been criticised after exempting itself from its own advertising rules to media outlets to advertise its new mining tax.

Meanwhile, Treasurer Wayne Swan said the campaign was opened up since big mining companies are promoting “grievous misrepresentations” of the resource super profits tax.
