New Zealand Prime Minister John Key’s intuition was right in not coming to Waitanga to sign the Trans Pacific Partnership Trade (TPPT) agreement which Wellington ratified a few days ago. Economic Minister Steven Joyce bore the brunt of a protestor’s anger at the deal. The incident just elevated the dildo from a sex toy into a protest tool, joining the ranks of the egg, tomato and shoe as items to throw at politicians.

The protester, nurse Josie Butler, hurled a pink dildo which hit Joyce smack on the face while he was discussing the TPPT with media on Friday. “That’s for raping our sovereignty,” The Washington Post quotes Butler. The sex toy hit Joyce on the lips while he was talking about the benefits of the secretive TPPT.

It then bounced off from the minister’s face and hit the breasts of a female reporter and fell on the ground. Cops picked Butler who was later released without charge. With the TPPT deal just signed, Butler believes she has to express her strong stand against the agreement to protect New Zealanders.

She explains, “I’m here as a nurse because I’m worried about the patient rights and how many people will essentially die if this goes through because the price of medication’s going up, so yeah, it’s really something I feel really strongly about,” quotes One News.

Waitangi, which was marking its foundation day on Feb. 6, is where an 1840 treaty was inked between Britons who migrated to New Zealand and the Maori chiefs who represented the aborigines. The treaty signed there is considered New Zealand’s founding document as a nation.

Beyond its historical significance, Waitangi has also gained notoriety as a place where activist throw things at VIPs. A shirt was once thrown at Queen Elizabeth and mud at a party leader. The incident became viral with the video that was posted on YouTube gaining a few thousand hits. It trended in social media as netizens used the hashtag #dildogate.

Joyce, who ironically was wearing a pink shirt under his suit, says it was the first time that a dildo was thrown on his face. He adds, “It would be unfortunate for being known for this incident.”

The TPPT was signed in Waitangi on Feb 4 between the US, which initiated the agreement, and 12 Pacific Rim nations, including Australia. It could result in the extension of intellectual property (IP) laws, which would affect prices of medicines, and rewrite international rules on the enforcement of IP regulations. Among the opposition to the TPPT is that it would benefit giant corporations at the public’s expense and the lack of transparency.
