Fire destroyed the popular restaurant and wedding venue, The Baths, in Sorrento, Victoria on Sunday evening. No casualties were declared as the venue was closed when the incident happened.

The fire reportedly started at 8 pm and it was not until 8:15 pm that help was called. According to ABC, Arthur Haynes of the Country Fire Authority said the cause of fire was unknown. Haynes explained that the original crew had a hard time gaining access to the burning property and initially had low water pressure to fight the fire. Specialist crews from Frankston and Mt. Martha were asked to give assistance to local brigades. It took about an hour to get the fire under control.

The restaurant is located at Point Nepean Road, which overlooks Port Philip Bay.

James Gibson, manager of The Baths, posted a Facebook message explaining the unfortunate incident. “We are devastated that The Baths restaurant has burnt down. Thankfully, no customers or staff have been injured, as it was a Sunday evening and the restaurant was closed,” he wrote. In the same post, he also thanked CFA volunteers for helping put out the fire.

The Baths is an iconic events venue in the area, which is about 1.5 hours drive away from Melbourne. The venue got its name from the Sorrento Sea Baths, which used to be on the same site in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Gibson asked people who have made reservations and weddings plans in The Baths to contact the management to discuss possible alternatives.
