Facebook has added new friends. The social networking giant has earned the support of 1 million active advertisers since Tuesday.

The company gets 85 percent of its revenues from the advertisements as reported by Reuters. However, the data showing how much the contribution of small businesses is in terms of ad revenue was not made public.

Small business owners account to the majority of Facebook advertisers. "Most small business owners start of as Facebook users, then migrate to become page owners, and from there migrate to become advertisers," Facebook director of small business Dan Levy was quoted as saying.

Market research firm eMarketer notes that the advertisers spent about $32 billion in 2002 for their online marketing initiatives.

Facebook however did not reveal the duration it took to gather such number of advertisers.

The social networking giant has clearly revolutionised the virtual world. From establishing a common ground for people the world over, it has helped build and re-establish links by connecting people through the platform.

It has also enabled business-minded folks to transform their concepts into reality albeit an alternative route. Today, it is not anymore necessary to own or rent a brick-and-mortar shop to sell merchandise and the like. Commerce in the virtual world is now for real and Facebook is partly to thank for that.

And this Facebook generation can only expect to see more changes in real-time.
