You might find it impossible for you and your friends to ever reach the moon for now but did you ever realize there are everyday items that you have that will keep you close to NASA? The U.S. space agency has been working nonstop to research a wide variety of products and other modern technologies that can improve the day to day life. As a matter of fact, there have been 6,300 patents filed by NASA along with the U.S. government, Discovery reports.

Since 1976, NASA has already listed every commercialized technological product that they have related to their research. If you want to learn more of these products that you may even find in your own home, then read on.

Plastic Coated Lenses

It was in 1972 when the Food and Drug Administration started telling manufacturers to use plastic material instead of glass to make lenses. This is not just because of its greater affordability but also for its capacity to better absorb ultraviolet radiation. NASA also required the same plastic coating to offer protection to their space equipment like the helmet visors of the astronauts.

Memory Foam

You may be surprised to know that the polyurethane foam was first created way back in 1966 right at the Ames Research Center. It was made to serve as cushion for rocket seats. However, these days, it is used for pillows and mattresses often.

Insoles of Shoes

The athletic shoes of today specifically from the KangaROOS USA borrowed the technology concept from the boots used on the moon. The space suit used for the missions of Apollo includes customized boots that have springs to help the astronauts with their steps with proper ventilation. Other shoe companies like AVIA have also taken the construction of the shoe and applied it to their own products.

Mini-Vacuum

It was for a 1969 moon mission that NASA made a partnership with Black & Decker to come up with a drill that is battery operated. Now the portable technology became a hit and was made available to consumers since 1979. In the 80s, the cordless mini vacuum called the Dustbuster was a hit appliance of all time.

Water Filter Technology

It was with NASA astronauts that the water technology was first conceptualized. They all needed some way to clean up the water they use in space since being sick while in mission can be troublesome. Since then, numerous companies have borrowed and applied this concept to make the water filters available to every home and make it useful for everyday living.
