Environment Victoria: Coal-guzzling power station to be shut down
According to ABC Online, Environment Victoria stated that Hazelwood Power Station in Latrobe Valley can be closed down by two years without Victoria's electricity supply being comprised.
A report has been released claiming to replace the brown coal-fired power station with clean energy projects would reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of Victoria by 12% yearly.
A spokesman of Environment Victoria, Mark Wakeham states that the GHG reduction could be achieved without reducing Victoria's electricity supply.
According to Wakeham, it may also create more job opportunity in renewable energy, energy efficiency and gas-fired power stations across the state.
He added that Hazelwood is the most polluting power station in Australia and it is a very good place to start with to reduce both the state's and country's GHG emissions.
However, the Hazelwood Power Station's managers claimed that the report was too absurd and simplistic.
Graeme York, the Chief Executive of International Power Hazelwood, said that discharging the plant would increase the cost of electricity.
He added that the 2012 time frame is the main thing that is too simplistic in terms of renewable energy generation.
He told ABC Online, "We have heard energy companies already talking about that it is a challenge to install renewable generation to meet the mandated renewable energy target the Government has set."
