The classic Japanese RPG series “Ys” is about to get a second lease on life, this time on iOS and Android devices thanks to retro game developer DotEmu. It has been announced that “Ys Chronicles 1” will be coming to mobile devices soon, though no actual release date was given for the mobile title.

“Ys Chronicles 1” isn’t the original “Ys” game that came out in 1987, but is actually the remake that came out on PC, PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable in the early 2000’s. This version of the game features completely redone graphics, while keeping the familiar action roleplaying gameplay, which fans of the game liked so much in the original “Ys” series.

Pocket Gamer noted that DotEmu haven’t announced how the game will play on the touchscreen devices. Most roleplaying games for mobile devices either give players virtual buttons to use on the touchscreen or rely on tap centric gameplay, for a more streamlined experience, so it will be interesting to see which method DotEmu will give to “Ys Chronicles 1.”

The storyline of the game hasn’t been changed according to an article from Siliconera. Players will still be given the role of protagonist Adol Christin, as he attempts to free the Kingdom of Estria from a horde of demons who have besieged the city. To complete Christin’s mission, players will have to gather the six sacred books of Ys and gather the knowledge from them to complete the mission and save the kingdom.

While the games have been quite popular in Japan, the “Ys” series hasn’t always taken off in the West. Prior to the 2005 release of “Ys VI,” there were only ever three “Ys” games that came out and they were mostly for the Famicon console. That all seemed to change when game developer XSEED Games managed to port a number of “Ys” games stateside, a number of which are now available on Steam.

No official release date was given for “Ys Chronicles 1” as the trailer below gives fans the very vague “soon” treatment. Fans of the game will probably be happy to know that one of their favourite titles is coming back.
