House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) arrives for a press conference at the Capitol on May 8, 2019, in Washington, D.C.

Former Vice-President Dick Cheney on Thursday became a trending topic on Twitter after his daughter, Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., had discussed how her father is “deeply troubled about where our party is."

“My dad is deeply troubled about where our party is, deeply troubled about where the country is,” Liz Cheney said at an event hosted by the Aspen Institute.

She said her father, who was vice-president during President George W. Bush’s term from 2001 to 2009, has given her a “tremendous source of advice and guidance and wisdom for me.”

Liz Cheney has faced pressure from Republicans for her criticism of former President Donald Trump and was one of the 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach him. She is now one of two from Congress to be serving on the select committee over the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.

She was nominated by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and has been branded by critics as a “Pelosi Republican.”

The comments from Dick Cheney come at a time when Republicans no longer have control over the Senate, House and the White House. The party has faced criticism for restricting voting rights ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

Trump, 75, remains the face of the party despite two impeachments and failing to win the popular vote in two presidential elections. Trump also faces a potential investigation after Allen Weisselberg, the chief financial officer for the Trump Organization, was charged in June with 15 felony counts for evading $344,745 in taxes over 15 years.

Liz Cheney's references to her father drew attention on social media. Many Twitter users responded to Dick Cheney trending by offering some scathing comments about his role in shaping the current Republican party.
