As part of the release of the Guinness World Records 2015 Gamer's Edition, the publication polled 5,000 gamers from 140 countries around the world about what their favourite video games were. The results are in, and the "Call of Duty series" by Activision took the top spot, overtaking legendary titles such as "Super Mario Bros.," " Minecraft," "Grand Theft Auto," "Halo" and "The Legend of Zelda" in the list of top games this year.

According to The Independent, those who took part in the online poll voted for their favourite individual games, but as several are long-running series (such as Resident Evil with over 20 different entries) the results were collated, to make the list of top 50 video games in their poll.

Since their introduction of their Gaming Edition, Guinness have many awards for completing unique and specific challenges in the fastest time possible within the games, with players all over the world competing for feats such as the fastest time possible and other game specific challenges. Most prominent among them is Canadian sharp-shooter Daniel McNeilly- who registered a yet-to-beaten time of 18.40 to set a record for fastest time to complete the Stay Sharp level of Modern Warfare 3 Spec Ops last year.

In the latest edition, they feature some amazing insights into the gaming industry including interviews, perspectives and facts on the biggest and most amazing games across all genres. Guiness World Records cheif Craig Glenday also tweeted that the top 50 games from the readers poll would form the basis of their latest edition.

The "Call Of Duty" franchise is recognised by Guinness World Records as being the best-selling first-person shooter (FPS) videogame series, having racked up an incredible 188,900,000 units sold across all formats as of July this year. The series also holds the record for most BAFTA-nominated videogame series, with 36 nominations across seven titles including the Modern Warfare and Black Ops editions. Activision's long standing series receives an image boost with players all over favoring the intense experience of the shooter franchise, which has led to it soaring above even longer standing and prominent series and titles over the years. Releasing this month is their latest instalment, "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" featuring Hollywood star Kevin Spacey -- playing the role of Jonathan Irons, a private military contractor intent on ruling the world.
