Nintendo has had an amazing 2017. In less than a year, Switch sales have reached 10 million units, and “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” has received plenty of accolades, including GOTY from The Game Awards 2017. Indeed, the release of the Switch brought forth plenty of blessings for the Japanese game company.

Part of the success involves games once available on other platforms immediately releasing for the Nintendo handheld; in fact, there are currently more multiplatform games than there are Switch exclusives. Listed below are a few games you might have missed this year. Two of them are Switch-only, while one is multiplatform.

‘Golf Story’ – Developer: Sidebar Games

RPG and sports don’t necessarily go well together, but “Golf Story” manages to mix the concepts well. You follow a man attempting to rebuild a shattered life by giving golf a second chance. At its heart is a tale of redemption with a hint of comedy, but the role-playing elements are difficult to miss. You travel to towns, talking to NPCs and even accepting to do favours for them. Instead of a sword, you have a golf club, and almost every in-game problem can be solved using your trusted stick.

‘Kamiko’ – Developer: Skipmore

“Kamiko” would most likely remind you of the Zelda games due to its top-down nature of gameplay. There are puzzles here and there, not to mention boss battles at the end of every stage. That’s that, however. The difference lies in how the game is presented. You start by choosing among three playable characters, each of whom has different skills. Also, the art direction is pure retro goodness, a conscious attempt to emulate the pixelated yet colourful look of classic games.

‘The Flame in the Flood’ – Developer: The Molasses Flood

Sure, “The Flame in the Flood” may have been available on other platforms way before Switch was released. What makes this title a worthy mention is the fact that Switch users get to enjoy a much-improved version, such as an improved crafting system and another dog.

Yes, there’s a dog. “The Flame in the Flood” tells the story of a girl named Scout and her canine companion as they try to survive a flooded wasteland. You help them by scavenging for items, crafting useful tools and looking after their overall well-being. Should you fail, you lose everything; this game has permadeath, so proceed with caution.
