The 14-year-old boy from Sydney found guilty of marijuana possession in Bali, Indonesia will be home before Christmas as his two-month sentence handed on Friday will cover the time he spent in detention in Denpasar while his trial went on.

"I think it's good that this family and this young man, it looks like, will be home for Christmas," said Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, according to AFP. Rudd also thanked Indonesian authorities for the speedy trial of the boy's case.

Judge Amser Simanjuntak of the Denpasar district court ruled that the nearly eight weeks the boy spent in jail should be counted against the sentence. The sentence ends Dec. 4.

The judge also noted the boy's crime-free background and proper demeanor in court for giving the favorable ruling.

The boy admitted to buying 7 grammes of marijuana in Kuta beach on Oct. 4. Prosecutors asked as lenier three-month sentence instead of the minimum two years imprisonment because he is a minor.

The boy's father attended the sentencing hearing on Friday. The family's lawyer, Muhammad Rifan, said the ruling is the best result and an appeal is unlikely.
