It was a lucky week for Apple fans who downloaded iOS 5 for their iPods, iPhones or iPads without getting an Error 3200 message. The same goes for those who lined up early outside Apple Stores and retailers and were able to get their hands on the iPhone 4S, which comes pre-loaded with the latest operating system from Apple, and which boasts 200 new features.

Well, luck strikes twice for people who have upgraded to iOS 5: A jailbreak was made available on launch day.

The Dev-Team Blog announced it has released a tethered redsn0w jailbreak for iOS 5.

These devices are supported:

-- iPod touch 3G

-- iPod touch 4G

-- iPad 1

-- iPhone3GS

-- iPhone4 (GSM)

-- iPhone4 (CDMA)

The present version cannot work yet on devices with A5 processors -- the iPad 2 and the newly released iPhone 4S.

For those unlocking their Apple devices for the first time, jailbreaking is the process of removing the limitations imposed by the manufacturer on devices running the iOS operating system through the use of custom kernels. Jailbreaking, if done successfully, allows users to (A) download and use applications that are otherwise only available for a premium at the Apple App Store or iTunes; (B) use software not approved by Apple; or (C) unlock a phone when switching carriers. Although the practice has not been declared illegal, Apple has warned that jailbreaking can void warranties.

The Redsn0w version is a tethered jailbreak, which means that rebooting the jailbroken iOS device would need the assistance of a Windows or Mac computer. Users would have to download and install the new iTunes 10.5 on their Windows PC or Mac. Before connecting the iOS device to the computer, users should make sure that a backup of everything is available. Members of the jailbreak community have indicated an untethered jailbreak is on its way.

Redsn0w has stressed that the present version is only for developers to make sure their apps still work.

"THIS JAILBREAK IS INTENDED ONLY FOR DEVELOPERS OF JAILBROKEN APPS! There are just too many broken components (e.g., Apple's official third-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc.) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps. (Seriously!)," Redsn0w representatives wrote in a blog post.

Redsn0w added unlockers, and users wishing to preserve their unlockable basebands should similarly stay away from this release because they may lose their unlockable baseband.

"It's still a tethered jailbreak on all except the old-bootrom iPhone3GS, and it doesn't apply to iPad2 or the upcoming iPhone4S," Redsn0w representatives added.

TFTS reports that devices that are unlockable -- iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS -- can now be safely upgraded to iOS 5 and subsequently unlocked again. The iPhone Dev Team updated its ultrasn0w solution to version 1.2.4, which supports unlocking iPhone 3GS (baseband: 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00) and iPhone 4 (baseband: 01.59.99) units after the software upgrade.

On Friday, Apple finally released the iPhone 4S, which sports a 3.5-inch screen; an 8-megapixel, 1080p high-definition camera; an A5 dual-core chip processor that is seven times faster than the graphics processor in the iPhone 4; 512 MB of RAM; two antennae to transmit and receive data; CDMA and GSM connectivity; 8 hours of 3G talk-time; and new applications like Siri and Find My Friends. Siri is a voice-recognition system that turns the device into a hands-free personal assistant. The iPhone 4S uses the iOS 5 platform.

Apple released the free iOS 5 for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4, the iPod touch (third and fourth generations) the iPad and the iPad 2. Massive demand for the software upgrade had some users complaining of Error 3200 interrupting the upgrading process. Many users have been able to get through after dozens of attempts.

With iOS 5 boasting 200 new features, Apple says it is taking "a mobile operating system that was already years ahead of anything else and moving it even further ahead." Among others, the new features for iOS 5 include a revamp on its notification system; integration with iCloud, the new storage service of Apple; a new messaging service for all i-gadgets; and full integration with Twitter.
