The Australian state of Victoria just criminalised mooning. Public display of one’s derriere could be penalised with a jail term of up to six months.

The ban on mooning is part of Victoria’s overhaul of sexual offence laws, one of the more than 50 crimes included. The legislation update separates indecent exposure from sexual exposure which is a more serious offence, says Victoria Attorney General Martin Pakula.

The distinction prevents a situation when a streaker at a sports event is placed in the same category as a pervert who jumps in front of a young girl and flashes his genitals. “They’re very different types of offences and the legislation for the first time makes that clear,” News.com.au quotes Pakula.

Victoria’s Summary Offence Act specifies the exposure of the anal or genital region is considered indecent, offensive or insulting behaviour. Streaking or mooning is an example of that offence.

In making mooning an offence, Pakula says the state aims to prevent people from doing it every day and not being sanctioned. Also outlawed by Victoria is singing or obscene song or ballad and behaving in a riotous, indecent, offensive or insulting manner.

Victoria streaking comedian Lucy Valentine disagrees with the new law. She saw it bans two of the most essential acts of civil disobedience, which she insists is harmless behaviour. Valentine warns of the state becoming so strict that “next thing you know you’ve got Sharia Law,” reports SBS.

She agrees that sexual exposure and flashing are bad but referring to the exposed buttocks as anal or genital region is “deeply offensive, incorrect, and a verbal assault on the Australian way of life,” Valentine insists. She says the comical nature of the Australia butt is “a deeply entrenched piece of culture” which she refuses to be disparaged.
