“The Vampire Diaries” season 8 has long been confirmed as the show’s final season, and while fans hope for a Delena reunion, Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon Salvatore, doesn’t want any of this pairing anymore.

Ever since Nina Dobrev, who plays Elena Gilbert, exited from the US fantasy vampire drama, some fans have lost interest as their beloved Delena (Damon-Elena) pairing was gone. The show have since suffered from poor ratings, and finally, it has been decided to end it on its upcoming season. And while fans are hopeful for Dobrev to appear and wrap up the season finale, Somerhalder didn’t seem as enthusiastic for a reunion with his ex-reel and ex-real girlfriend.

As reported by Inquistr, for Somerhalder, “The Vampire Diaries” could end with Damon and Elena not having anything to do with each other.

“Happy endings don’t happen in Mystic Falls,” Somerhalder shared relating to ‘Delena’s’ story. “The happy ending I could see is that this girl gets to live her life, never even knowing these two brothers exist.”

Furthermore, the 37-year-old actor said his idea of a perfect ending is for Damon and Stefan (Paul Wesley) to go to a beautiful Caribbean island, wearing their Speedos, looking up at the moon, drinking 60-year-old Barbados rum and bonding like brothers.

“And when the sun comes up, they should have their final toast, give each other a hug, throw their rings into the sea, and (turn to dust),” Somerhalder stated. “That’s a happy ending. They’re in a great place with great lives.”

While Somerhalder’s lack of enthusiasm for a reunion with Dobrev is somehow disappointing, hard-core ‘Delena’ fans continue to hope for the couple to have one final scene for the last season of “The Vampire Diaries.” This hope is fuelled as showrunner Julie Plec have repeatedly told various media outlets that she would definitely have the actress back in the show.

“I’m sticking with my side of the plan, which is to bring her back at the very end,” Plec stated to TV Line. “It would be a real tragedy if we couldn’t bring that story back around, full circle.”

Plec's statement assured viewers that Nina is expected to come back to the show and for Elena to come back to Mystic Falls where it all began. The 44-year-old writer is reportedly doing the negotiations for old casts to come back for "The Vampire Diaries" season 8 to make her ending idea come true.
