When visiting Australia, you have to make it a point to try some of their unique dishes. Some of these are native only in the continent and will provide you with a burst of flavors. Others might contain special ingredients, adding to the taste and exotic appeal.

1. The Lot

"The Lot" is a hamburger taken to a whole new level. The special sandwich features a runny fried egg, cheese, tomato, onions, bacon, beets, pineapple and, of course, the patty. People may also add mustard, ketchup, mayonnaise and other ingredients to make it a grand as possible.

2. Potato Cakes

EndlessSimmer.com writes that potato cakes are their own version of French fries. Many Australians like to eat their fish with potato cakes, which are big circles of mashed potatoes. These are deep-fried and seasoned with salt. The huge size is what makes these very unique.

3. Pavlova

Those with sugar cravings will surely enjoy the decadent Pavlova. The dessert was made to honor Anna Pavlova, the famous Russian ballerina who toured Australia several decades ago. Generally, the Pavlova has a meringue shell with a marshmallow-like substance within. Fruit and other treats can also be added on top. Australians have their own special versions of the Pavlova.

4. Emu meat pie

Emu is the giant bird, which is actually consumed by Australians. It has the same iron content as beef and is fat-free, making it a good meat option for the weight-conscious. According to CNN, there are meat pies made of smoked emu meat, feta cheese, onion and black pepper. The pie also has a filo-pastry crust. Australians also use ostrich meat when making pies.

5. Chiko roll

The Australian snack was influenced by Chinese spring rolls. The snack contains beef, cabbage, green beans, onion, barley, celery, spices and other ingredients placed inside a battered tube. There is actually no chicken in a chiko roll, although most versions of these have at least one secret ingredient.

There are several other delectable dishes in Australia using the most unique items like kangaroo or crocodile meat. Make sure you try the five above for a memorable experience.
