A two-year-old boy was found dead in his cot in a corner room after fire broke down his family’s house in Queensland on Thursday. It was the boy’s birthday and although the exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed by forensic officers, it is believed that the blaze was set after the toddler played with the matches used to light his birthday cake.

The family was celebrating Roman Warwick’s second birthday prior to the accident. On the other hand, his mother, Belinda, and four other siblings were able to escape the flames that engulf their home in Kokoda Street in Beenleigh, near Brisbane. The boy was desperately searched for when they realised that he was missing. Roman’s father, Jared, just came home from fetching one of the kids in school, when he found out about the accident. He wanted to go inside their burning house to look for Roman himself, but the police and fire crew just won’t let him. “The mother was home with the other five and she got four out,” Acting Inspector John Hamrey reported. “The other little fella, a son, the two-year-old, was in the back part of the house and she couldn’t get to him. We believe it was his birthday today.” Roman was soon found dead beneath the rubble of the burnt building. It took an hour and five crews to extinguish the fire.

“To see the mum and dad just wailing, crying, it was just gut-wrenching scenes,” said Louie Naumovski, who arrived at the scene 15 minutes after the fire broke out. Naumovski is the founder of the Logan House Fire Support Network, a non-profit organisation that had extended assistance to the Warwick family. He added that the family stayed in a motel room during the night of the accident is probably going to stay there for some time. They are now in in the midst of searching for a house to shelter the kids, whilst preparing for the funeral of Roman.
