A Canadian woman who was onboard a planefrom Calgary to Japan unexpectedly gave birth to a healthy baby girl whilst flying across the Pacific Ocean. A spokesperson from Air Canada confirmed this news on Monday, which according to the father was completely unexpected.

The 23-year-old woman, named Ada Guan, went into labour mid-air. Her partner thought she was just having cramps or stomach ache. But when the flight attendants called for help, a volunteer passenger who is also a doctor, helped Guan delivered a baby girl. It turns out that the couple did not know that Guan was pregnant. "I couldn't imagine. This happened completely unexpectedly," the father said. “Her belly wasn’t even big. She just thought she was gaining a little bit of a weight. She didn’t think anything out of it.” But it turned out that we have a beautiful baby girl, he added as he showed a photo of their new bundle of joy in his camera phone.

The Air Canada plane was given priority landing and arrived at the Narita International Airport 30 minutes before the scheduled time. According to them, they allow passengers on their 36th week of pregnancy to go onboard, provided that they are expecting a normal delivery and that they have no history of premature labour. Guan’s age of gestation was not known.

The new mother and her baby was brought to the hospital, and remained there for an overnight admission. According to Air Canada, both were doing well. Meanwhile, the flight crew and the passengers were delighted to see such a happy miracle. One passenger even commented that everyone was clapping their hands.

This is not the first time that emergency delivery was performed mid-air. In March, a mother went into labour and delivered a baby boy hours after take-off that Qatar Airways was prompted to make an emergency landing in Canada. In January, a woman also gave birth to a baby girl whilst onboard a flight from Ammam to New York.
