Global media firm Thomson Reuters rolled out its Domestic Partners Eligibility policy in the Philippines. The policy recognises the live-in and same-sex partners of its employees as eligible for benefits under the company's healthcare plan, group life insurance and retirement plan.

Similar policies are in Reuters' U.S. and UK offices, but it would be the first time it would be implemented in Asia, ABS-CBN reports.

With the new policy, unmarried workers with domestic partners, whether they are of the same or opposite gender, could now enroll the latter as their qualified dependent. But they must be in a committed relationship.

The change in policy is part of Reuters' embracing diversity to drive innovation and bring competitive advantage, said Peter Buenaseda, the company's senior site officer and head of Human Resources.

"We foster an inclusive workplace where all employees are valued and have the opportunity to reach their full potential," Mr Buenaseda said.

Thomson Reuters employs 2,200 people in the Philippines.

It is believed to be the first company in the Philippines to extend benefits to same-sex and live-in partners of its single employees.
