Taiwanese computer and electronics products manufacturer Compal Electronics Inc. has denied reports that it plans to put up a notebook plant in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province of China.

Compal spokesman Gary Liu said the company has yet to decide on a location for its investment in western China, according to Digitimes.com.

The Taipei-based Compal is also engaged in the research, development, design and distribution of computer, communication and consumer electronic (3C) products.

The governments of Chengdu and Chongqing, another Sichuan city, are aggressively recruiting Taiwanese computer manufacturers to invest in their respective city.

Chongqing already attracted investmens from Foxconn Electronics, Quanta Computer and Inventec Corp. and the city is aiming to ship 80 million notebooks a year in the next five years, industry sources said.

Foxconn, a subsidiary of Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd., makes iPods and iPhones.

Quanta is the largest notebook computer manufacturer in the world supplying ACER, Cisco, Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Sharp Corporation, Siemens AG, Sony, Sun Microsystems, and Toshiba.

Inventec also manufactures notebooks, servers and mobile devices.
