A Swedish man was killed while he was riding a shopping trolley down a street in eastern Sydney with another man when it suddenly went out of control and hit against a speeding car. The other man who was behind the trolley was admitted to the Prince of Wales Hospital with serious injuries.

In the incident that occurred after midnight on Tuesday, a 28-year-old man was sitting inside the trolley while another man of the same age was behind it. The man killed in the accident was was a student at the University of NSW while the other was visiting the country. The police have not yet disclosed more details about them.

"The university is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of one of our international students in an accident overnight in Randwick," said Professor Ian Jacobs, the university's President and Vice Chancellor. "Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with the young man's family and friends at this difficult time. The university is providing support services and is continuing to work with local police."

The duo was on a joyride on the Coogee Bay Road at Randwick when their trolley suddenly went out of control and crashed with a car that came from the opposite direction at high speed. The collision sent the man inside the trolley hurtling out of it. He died at the accident scene while the other was taken to the hospital with grave injuries but in a stable condition.

According to the Chief Inspector Chris Stiles, the two men were walking back home when they came across a shopping trolley, which they decided to take a ride on. The little idea of fun turned out fatal for them when they lost control of the thing while riding down the steep road. He told the Sydney Morning Herald that the trolley was speeding down the street at an estimated speed of 80km/hour before it landed on the wrong side of the road, near the intersection point of the Coogee Bay Road with the Judge Street.

According to Detective Superintendent Gavin Dengate, both men were catapulted out of the trolley due to the force of the collision.

"Unfortunately we all know what shopping trolleys are like, they are very difficult to control," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted him as saying. "The male who was in the shopping trolley was catapulted out, landing in a kerb on the southern side of the road. The other person landed after the collision in the middle of the road."

The driver of the car with which the trolley collided was a 45-year-old man. He was tested negative in a breath test and did not sustain any injury. Dengate said the man was shaken by the incident. However, it is still not clear whether any charges would be put on the other man who survived the accident .
