“Supernatural” season 12 will see Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) learning about their mother’s more complicated history. As showrunner Andrew Dabb has revealed, the boys’ reunion with their newly resurrected mother, Mary Winchester (Samantha Smith), isn’t as smooth as hoped.

‘Supernatural’ spoilers for season 12 and 11 ahead

As “Supernatural” fans know, Mama Winchester is the real hunter in the family. Her early demise led their father John to pursue the life of hunting for himself and his kids. It’s the life that Mary avoided once she married John because, as her younger self told Dean during one of the time travel episodes in season 5, she did not want the same for her family.

“But we’re going to find out maybe that’s not the whole story,” Dabb told TV Line, referring to Mary’s hunting life.

In the season 11 finale, Mary was brought back to life by the Darkness (Emily Swallow) as a parting gift to Dean. As the Winchester matriarch died when Dean was very young and Sam was just a baby, it’s curious to see how Sam and Dean’s relationship with their mother would be.

“Sam blames Dad for all the hunting stuff, but really, you could argue it’s mum’s fault,” Padalecki said. “She was the hunter. It was the Campbell family, not the Winchester family. It wasn’t her fault, but it was her lineage that led us to where we are now.”

That said, Sam doesn’t want his mum to go out and hunt. “It’s my mum, man! I don’t want to see her get punched or shot or bit by a vampire!” the 34-year-old actor said.

Dean, however, will experience his mum’s hunting prowess first-hand. In the season 12 teaser shown at the San Diego Comic Con last month, Dean is seen face down in the dirt because Mary flips him.

“It’s interesting because, yeah, she’s his mother, but she’s also a stranger,” Ackles said. “That adjustment is going to be very tricky.”

But for the angel Castiel (Misha Collins), his relationship with the boys’ mother will be special.

“Now that Mary is back, [Cas] is tattletaling a lot,” Collins joked at the SDCC 2016. “I think there’s going to be an interesting dynamic between the two of us,” he added, referring to is character Castiel and Mary. “Because in a way we’re outsiders and we are sharing something in that.”

The return of Hitler

Dabb has also revealed that the show will be bringing back Hitler, and Sam and Dean will be fighting him. In season 8, the Thule society, a group of necromancers planning on world domination, was introduced. For season 12, the members’ master plan is to bring back Hitler, which Dabb described as a “psychotic Richard Simmons.”

“Sam and Dean are going to fight Hitler, and that’s opening up some interesting doors us in terms of just doing some more crazy stuff.”

“Supernatural” season 12 will premiere on Oct. 13 on The CW in the US. Its Australian airdate has not yet been announced.
