“Supernatural” season 12 has a new Lucifer. Rock superstar Rick Springfield is replacing Mark Pellegrino for the role of God’s favourite son. Stars Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins and Mark Sheppard also provided mild spoilers about the show’s 12th season at the San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) panel on Sunday.

Springfield’s Lucifer was described as “a rock star who’s a little bit on the downside” and attempting for a comeback. Exec producer Robert Singer has revealed that Lucifer will try out on a few vessels. Springfield is currently in Vancouver, Canada, to film his first appearance.

The role of Lucifer has been played mainly by Pellegrino in the show. However, as the vessel wasn’t Lucifer’s true vessel, his body started to crumble. And with season 11 finale’s event (SPOILERS) – wherein Lucifer was forced out of Castiel’s vessel – it’s understandable why the show needed another vessel for the devil.

‘Supernatural’ season 12 spoilers: Mary Winchester

The upcoming season’s most anticipated character is not Lucifer, though. Mary Winchester, Sam and Dean’s deceased mother, has come back, and fans are curious about the dynamic of her relationship with her sons, as well as with the Winchester’s angel, Castiel.

“When mum left, Sam (Padalecki) was a baby and Dean was a child. The children that she knew are now men, so the relationship is kind of non-existent because there isn’t one. It’s an interesting situation, them trying to bridge that massive gap,” Ackles, who plays Dean Winchester, said.

Mary (Samantha Smith), as fans know, was raised a hunter. However, she never wanted her own sons to become hunters themselves. As showrunner Andrew Dabb said, Mary will come back into being a hunter, but she’s not necessarily happy about it.

As TV Line reports, Dabb said Castiel (Collins) has a “very specific response” to Mary and has a “very cool” bond with her. Collins said there’s “interesting little dynamic” between the fallen angel and the Winchester mama because they are both outsiders.

‘Supernatural’ season 12 spoilers: Crowley and Rowena, Castiel, Men of Letters

Crowley’s (Sheppard) relationship with his mother Rowena (Ruth Connell) isn’t exactly an ideal one. And for the next season, their relationship will unsurprisingly go “downhill fast.”

Dabb admitted that the storyline of God (Rob Benedict) and the Darkness (Emily Swallow) is hard to top, so the show is going back to basics. As Collins has previously revealed, Castiel is getting most of his “mojo” back. The show’s resident angel still has his wings broken, but he is in a warrior mode, much “Cas from season 4,” Collins said. “He’s angry. He’s in a fighting spirit. He’s after Lucifer.”

That makes the two of them. Apart from Castiel, Crowley is also after Lucifer for humiliating him last season. Dabb said the scene with Crowley licking the floor was improvised.

Season 11 finale episode ended with Sam (maybe) getting shot by Lady Toni Bevell (Elizabeth Blackmore) from the UK edition of the Men of Letters. Padalecki said the season will explore more about the mysterious secret society. “They’re not off to a great start,” he said.

“Supernatural” season 12 will be back in October.
