“Supernatural” season 11 episode 14 went to the past in the time of the Nazis. “The Vessel” sees Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) travelling to 1943 to retrieve an artefact they suspect can defeat Amara/The Darkness. Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki), meanwhile, stays in the present with Lucifer, who is still posing as Castiel (Misha Collins).

Spoilers for ‘The Vessel’ follow below. Please proceed with caution.

Crowley (Mark A. Sheppard), the show’s resident villain whom fans just can’t help but love, has been reduced from being the king of hell to Castiel/Lucifer’s leashed pet dog. Although Castiel/Lucifer was enjoying tormenting Crowley, he knew he couldn’t kill Amara alone. Fortunately for him, Sam and Dean called him to ask for his help.

When the Winchesters found out that there’s a certain object called the Hand of God that could potentially defeat Amara (Emily Swallow), they hoped to retrieve it. The problem is it was lost when the submarine carrying it was sunk.

Dean called on Castiel, thinking the fallen angel could help them travel back to the past, just like he did twice before. Sam doubted Castiel could help them since Castiel’s wings were broken; he couldn’t even teleport. Castiel, who was really Lucifer using Castiel’s vessel, claimed time travel uses a different system, and therefore he could help them with it. Sam was still concerned what time travel could do to Castiel, knowing that it would weaken the angel considerably. Dean insisted that he would the one to go because he was the least valuable player. Castiel/Lucifer promised he would stay by Dean’s side the entire trip.

However, the submarine was protected, preventing angels from entering it. Dean was then left alone in the past, while Castiel/Lucifer accidentally stayed with Sam in the present.

Dean in the past

Dean revealed himself to Delphine (guest star Weronika Rosati), a female member of the Men of Letters who killed a Nazi general to steal the Hand of God. She readily believed him, as did the rest of the submarine crew, albeit reluctant at first, when a German ship appeared out of nowhere to attack them.

The Nazi general Delphine killed turned out to a necromancer, and was therefore alive. He commanded the German ship that was attacking them. Delphine removed the warding signs in the submarine so angels could get in the ship. There’s one tattooed on her as well, so she asked Dean to kill her. He didn’t have the time. The ship was attacked before he could.

She sacrificed herself anyway by using the Hand of God, destroying both the German and US submarines and allowing Dean to be transported back to the present with the help of Castiel/Lucifer.

Sam and Castiel/Lucifer in the present

Before he could be transported, though, Sam and Castiel were still trying to figure out how to erase all warding signs in the ship so they could bring Dean back. Sam found a spell that could remotely remove the warding in the ship. However, no one has tried it before because it needed an archangel. Lucifer, who was an archangel, gathered the ingredients for the spell, alarming Sam because he thought Castiel wasn’t strong enough to do it.

Sam instead offered to add his soul so they could get more power to the spell. It’s fatal, but Sam trusted Castiel. Lucifer dropped his charade and revealed himself to Sam, intending to kill him. Castiel, however, regained momentarily control on his vessel, thus preventing Lucifer from killing Sam. He then admitted that he allowed Lucifer in so they could kill Amara.

Dean back in the present

Although immediately warned by Sam that Castiel was actually Lucifer, Dean was still overpowered by Castiel/Lucifer, who held the Hand of God. He was about to use it to kill the Winchesters, but it turned out the relic had drained all its powers when Delphine used it. Incensed, Castiel/Lucifer started going for Dean, but Sam banished him with a blood symbol.

Later on, Dean promised to Sam they would save Castiel. He believed their friend didn’t go willingly, and therefore he could still be saved. Dean then reflected on how Delphine and the submarine’s crew sacrificed to save him.
