Several viewers would agree that one of the most interesting storylines in “Supergirl” is the love story of Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima). This is particularly true for those who have followed Danvers and Sawyer's love story. In connection to this, Leigh has opened up about her character coming out in the show and said she thinks people in lesbian relationships can be as happy as anybody else.

In the American television series, Alex and Maggie are introduced as capable and dynamic women who share a beautiful love story and save the world at the same time. It seems Leigh thinks there should be nothing wrong with her character coming out as lesbian and having a girlfriend.

“Lesbian relationships can be healthy too. If you're in a queer relationship, it doesn't mean that you're going to be struggling the entire time you're together,” she maintained. The actress said people who are in such kind of relationship can be as happy and healthy as anybody else. Leigh believes that some people can relate to her character.

“There is a part of all of us that can relate to hiding a piece of ourselves that we don't want to be judged,” the actress told Arts Mic. She explained that most of us do not want the feeling of rejection and so the tendency is that we bury things. “Sometimes, the people that we're closest to are the hardest ones to talk to,” she added, describing viewers who ponder coming out.

Leigh said she thinks the timing was right for Alex to come out. She was in her late 20s when she decided she is a lesbian. Prior to that, she had a boyfriend in med school who would write poems about fighting. Fans believe that they broke up because of that.

The actress has also shared how she feels about the viewers' reaction on her character. She confessed that she actually gets a lot of messages, and the experience for her is humbling and challenging at the same time. "People are getting less and less afraid of talking about it," she said.

In the series, Leigh plays the role of Alex, a top agent of the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) and the daughter of Jeremiah Danvers and Eliza Danvers. She is an adoptive sister of Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist).

Leigh is best known for her portrayal of Janey Briggs in “Not Another Teen Movie.” She has also appeared in ABC medical drama “Grey's Anatomy” as Lexie Gray and was a series regular on the ABC legal drama “The Practice.” The actress began starring in “Supergirl” in October 2015.

The second part of “Supergirl” season 2 returned to the small screens in January. The series airs on Fox8 in Australia every Tuesday at 9:10 a.m.
