Renowned physicist and cosmologist Stephen Hawking has given devastated One Directions fans a sense of comfort regarding Zayn Malik’s departure from the popular boyband last month. Hawking suggested via hologram that theoretical physics just might come up with proof that the 22-year-old singer is still a part of the group, albeit in an alternate universe that is yet to be discovered.

Hawking appeared into Sydney Opera House Saturday night via hologram streamed from Cambridge University in the U.K. to discuss his life accomplishments, religion, black holes and his ongoing battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), USA Today reported. Amidst questions on the future of humanity, one member of the audience stood up and asked, "What do you think is the cosmological effect of Zayn leaving One Direction and consequently breaking the hearts of millions of teenage girls across the world?"

The esteemed scientist did not fail to give a crowd-pleasing response, joking, “Finally, a question about something important.” He went to advise heartbroken 1D fans to pay attention to the study of theoretical physics, for it could prove the existence of alternate realities someday. His encouraging words wrapped in a science lesson then states that in parallel universe, the band could still be whole. "It would not be beyond the realms of possibility that somewhere outside of our own universe lies another, different universe and in that universe, Zayn is still in One Direction," he added. He even concluded the topic with even more good news, saying that one lucky fan is happily married to Zayn in another possible universe.

The singer in question decided to quit 1D a month ago after claiming in a statement that he wanted to be a “normal 22-year-old” living away from the spotlight. His announcement broke the hearts of fans all around the world and even more so when his plans of normality were overturned when news broke out that he was opting for a solo career after all.

Hawking’s wide-ranging interview also tackled the award-winning film about his life and marriage “The Theory of Everything.” According to The Guardian, Hawking said he was apprehensive about the project at first, fearing that the movie would be biased, but later found it “surprisingly honest”; he even approved of actor Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of him. He did feel that the film should have had “more science and fewer feelings,” but then again that was how he felt about all films.

The 73-year-old was joined by his daughter and science communicator Lucy Hawking and physicist Paul Davies, who were live on stage in Sydney. He ended the talk by quoting Star Trek’s Captain Kirk, “Now beam me up, Scotty,” after which his digital image disappeared in a flash of light.
