A new theory about “Star Wars: Episode 8” looks at the big question of who are Rey’s parents? The question has been a subject of much speculation among the fans, after “The Force Awakens” only teased the character’s background and built it up to be of some significance for the storyline.

[Spoiler alert]

A new video posted on the YouTube channel of Mike Zeroh examines the popular theories by the fans about Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) background. When the character was first introduced to the fans without a last name it was widely speculated that she was the daughter of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), and that the main saga will continue to focus on the Skywalker family.

The theory got further traction after “The Force Awakens” was released. Rey was found on the desert planet of Jakku, and her solitary journey to self discovery and questions about her parents bears a stark resemblance to the journeys of Luke in the original trilogy and Anakin (Hayden Christensen) in the prequel trilogy.

Will Luke be revealed as Rey’s father in “Star Wars: Episode 8”? Mike also points out that a section of the fans have their doubts about the new trilogy continuing to focus on the Skywalker family. Instead, some believe that the character could be the granddaughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Two factors that seem to connect Rey to Kenobi are her fighting style with the lightsaber and her accent. However, Mike’s theory is that the character is connected to both Luke and his Jedi Master.

Rey is the granddaughter of both Darth Vader and Obi-Wan, according to Mike. According to the theory Kenobi had a daughter and she and Luke get into a relationship. Their daughter is Ridley’s character.

Mike points out that both Kenobi and Darth Vader were heard in the vision of Rey in “The Force Awakens.” If Ridley’s character is revealed to be the daughter of Luke in “Star Wars: Episode 8,” it would explain how the character was able to learn about the Force and use the lightsaber so quickly, according to Mike. The connection to some of the most powerful characters in the galaxy is sure to make her a powerful figure too.
