South Park season 21 spoilers, South Park
Mr. Garrison / Donald Trump in a previous episode of South Park season 20. Comedy Central official / Youtube screen grab

The 21st season of "South Park" will feature fewer Donald Trump references and more fart jokes, according to co-creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The next chapter of Comedy Central's iconic animated series will reportedly air ten episodes through September and December.

Last year, Stone and Parker wrote season 20 under the pre-conceived notion that Hillary Clinton would win the U.S. Presidential election. Therefore, the primary storylines were built around gender wars and South Park's women feeling marginalised and slighted. However, Trump's shocking win on Election Day forced the writers to drop an entire episode and write a new one at the very last minute. In season 19, the storylines were built around the gentrification of South Park, not to mention the introduction of PC principal.

Parker and Stone are taking a different approach towards "South Park season 21" -- with plans to distance themselves from the infamous Mr. Garrison / Donald Trump storyline. They are also no longer enthused about the serialised format they've followed over the last three seasons, with a clear-cut plan to return to the classic standalone format. In recent years, South Park has been dubbed as the show that highlights present day society's sexual and political innuendos.

South Park season 21 spoilers: The return of fart jokes

During a recent appearance on the Bill Simmons podcast, Parker and Stone that they didn't want viewers to get caught up in it being a political show. “That was part of the bummer for us about (last) season; we didn’t want to make it a big Trump thing, and we kept thinking it was gonna go away and we didn’t want to get caught up in just being a political show. There’s plenty of good political comedy out there. We like to dabble in that and do that one week, but then the next week we want to do fart jokes.

"We love to change tones. And it’s interesting, ’cause now people are (saying), “OK, well let’s see how you deal with Trump this coming season.” No one ever said, “Oh, the new season’s coming, how you going to deal with Obama in this season?” We’re not that show and we never were” (We want to return) to Fart jokes," Parker reiterated during the podcast (listen here), via Deadline.

When asked if they planned to avoid Donald Trump jokes because of the notion that "somebody who almost couldn’t be parodied because (he is) a parody," Parker responded: “If you have like a little monkey and it’s running himself into the wall over and over and you’re like, ‘That’s funny, but how am I going to make fun of the monkey running himself into the wall?’ I can discuss the monkey running himself into the wall, I can copy the monkey running into the wall, but nothing’s funnier than the monkey just running himself into the wall.”

South Park season 21 release date

If the last few seasons are anything to go by, "South Park season 21" should premiere in the third week of September. In 2015, Comedy Central announced that the Emmy Award-winning series will continue to produce new, original episodes through 2019.
