After the success of the Sony Xperia Z smart phone, Sony officially unveils a new addition to their smart phone range: the Sony Xperia M. The Sony handset is the smaller and more affordable option with other available color choices as well with the hopes of meeting the same level of success that the water-resistant Sony Xperia Z achieved.

The Sony Xperia M has a 4-inch TFT screen display with the 854x480p FWVGA resolution. Fast operation speed is credited to the Qualcomm 1GHz dual-core processor incorporated on the smart phone with the Adreno 305 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU), 1GB of RAM, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update and Xperia UI.

The performance of the dual-core processor on the Sony Xperia M is expected to be capable of running majority of the applications and games available at the Google Play Store. On the camera features, Sony Xperia M features the 5MP camera with the Exmor RS sensor and impressive features such as LED flash, 4x digital zoom, autofocus, face detection, image stabilization and capability to capture 720p HD resolution images and videos.

Though the Sony Xperia M does not have the Mobile BRAVIA image processing engine, Sony assures that the users can still experience a bright display from its scratch-resistant glass comparable to the Sony Xperia L. The available internal storage capacity is 4GB but the Sony Xperia M has a microSD card slot that can expand memory storage up to 32GB to support large-sized files.

Other impressive features and specs are the compatibility with 2G and 3G HSPA+ networks for fast internet download speeds, support on Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, microUSB, Wi-Fi connection, Wi-Fi hotspot, ClearAudio+ technology, xLOUD and 3D Surround Sound. The dual-SIM Xperia M smart phone will have the available color choices of black, purple, and white while the base model sports a yellow casing.

According to Sony's assessment on the Xperia M battery, the 1750mAh can power up to 489 hours of 2G standby time and up to 454 standby hours on 3G mode with the STAMINA mode that can help in conserving battery life. For the talk time, the battery can last up to 10 hours on the 2G network and up to 9 hours with 3G.

Sony will reportedly appoint a lower price tag on the Sony Xperia M compared to the Sony Xperia SP. Based on the Xperia SP price of $349, Sony Xperia M is projected to have the $279 pricing scheme. The release date of the Sony Xperia M has not yet been confirmed but current reports suggest that the arrival of the latest smart phone will be some time in Q3 2013.
