Prince Charles almost cancelled his wedding to Princess Diana, according to a new biography of the first in the line to the throne of England. Catherine Mayer, a Time magazine journalist and author claimed in the recently published biography titled “Charles: Heart of a King.”

According to Telegraph, both Prince Charles and Princess Diana had doubts about their wedding and even thought of calling it off. The author has reportedly claimed that on the evening of the wedding Prince of Wales told a close associate that he “was desperate.” It is alleged that the Prince thought the future Princess is “not the jolly country girl he had assumed.”

The book goes on to claim that the Prince shared his doubts with a member of his inner circle and said “I can’t go through with it…I can’t do it.”

As for Lady Diana, she was also struggling with her own doubts attributed to his involvement with Camilla Parker Bowles and his feelings for her. It is claimed Lady Diana told her own biographer Andrew Mortan that before the wedding she told her sister that she “can’t marry him, this is absolutely unbelievable.”

She was told that it was “too late” to pull out of the wedding. But Mayer claims that Lady Diana had no idea Prince Charles also had to be “coaxed to the altar.”

The book that got published on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2015, has created quite a stir and controversy. Responding to the claims made in the book, Clarence House aide insists that the author has “overstated the exclusive access she was given to the Prince.” Mayer reportedly had a nine-minute conversation. But Mayer told the BBC that Clarence House helped her to attend the press events and also talk to members of Prince Charles’ inner circle and his friends.

Daily Mail notes the book has evoked anger for portraying Prince Charles “as a man ‘driven by guilt.’” It is understood that Clarence House has refuted most of the claims made in the book and insists the book by Catherine Mayer is "in no way authorised by the palace."
