Serena Williams is playing at her first ever Auckland tennis match at the ASB Classic. The international tournament has a US$226,750 (AU$313,576) prize money, but Williams is more excited about playing for the first time in the region. The World No. 2 beat France’s Pauline Parmentier on Tuesday with a score of 6-3, 6-4, advancing to the second round of Auckland’s ASB Classic.

An on court interview with Williams revealed she encountered few difficulties adjusting to the wind. She said during the time she trained prior to the event, she did not encounter the windy side of the region. “This wind was really getting to me! This whole week I practiced with no wind, but today it was so windy,” she said. Despite the difficulties, Williams described her experience as fun and interesting, believing she also played well in her first match.

Other big names expected to join Serena Williams is her sister Venus Williams and Danish player Caroline Wozniacki. According to the WTA, this is Serena’s first appearance after losing at the US Open semifinals against Czech tennis player Karolina Priskova.

Serena Williams confirmed her appearance at the ASB Classic during an Auckland charity event in New Zealand. In an interview, Williams said, “I've never been in Auckland and so I've never had an opportunity to be first in the world to welcome in this New Year.” The charity event featured the Williams sisters playing against Rugby stars Julian and Ardie Savea.

The ASB Classic tennis tournament is the perfect opportunity for the US tennis athlete to collect her first ever Auckland championship trophy. Battling injuries after the US Open and mostly third and fourth quarter of 2016, Serena is back with a vengeance. She added the event made her realised every match counts. “ I'm feeling like I'm trying to get out there, and that every match counts," she said.
