Samsung is likely to join Apple, LG and Motorola in the smartwatch segment as the South Korea-based company reportedly plans to introduce the Samsung Gear A smartwatch. Samsung’s smartwatch is expected to be powered by the company’s Tizen operating system, according to reports.

Gear A, which is expected to be a round-shaped smartwatch is likely to be launched this year, reports Digital Trends. Samsung’s upcoming wearable product will get a rotating bezel that will aid navigation on the watch and control its other functionalities. The bezel might perform the same functions managed by the digital crown on the Apple Watch. The new Tizen-based smartwatch is expected to sport an Exynos 3472 dual-core chip, a 360 x 360 pixel display resolution, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and a 250mAh battery.

Samsung revealed several details that hinted at the possible design of the Gear A smartwatch. Some pictures taken by Sammobile reveal the fully round smartwatch with a silver bezel, a crown and a silver lug at both ends. Though the final design is yet to be revealed by the company, the render gives an impression that Gear A would look sleek but less masculine than the LG Watch Urbance.

In April, Samsung invited developers to help build the next Samsung wearable gadget before the launch of these products this year. This invitation aimed at giving the global developer community an early access to the Software Development Kit (SDK) to the upcoming wearable device.

Samsung also declared that the new device will be the “7th generation of Samsung Gear with a wrist watch type” and marks the first time Samsung released its wearable SDK to third-party developers. The company is likely to announce the unveiling of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus at an event scheduled on Aug. 13 in New York.
