Apparently, 2013 is a good year for Samsung Electronics Co. Pioneering new undiscovered lands, the South Korean communication devices giant will bring the speed-breaking 5G connectivity by 2020.

mmWave Mobile Technology breakthrough

Samsung Electronics' new 5G connectivity technology has broken through millimeter-wave bands barriers that existed so far in the industry. The breakthrough revolves around high frequency data transmission through longer distances even in the presence of atmospheric attenuation. Some of the factors that so far barricaded progress in millimeter-wave band technology included atmospheric physics, radio signals in relation to oxygen molecule resonance, besides 'rain fade', (where radio signals are absorbed by weather components such as snow, ice or rain).

5G connectivity technology, that Samsung Electronics Co. intends to introduce in 7 years from now, will be 'several tens of GBPS faster per base station', allowing users to download entire movies of Ultra- High-Definition (HD) quality of unlimited size.

To achieve 5G connectivity, Samsung Electronics Co.'s research and development team used 64 antenna elements that were structured to transmit data at the speed of 1.056 GBps, at frequencies equivalent to 28 GHz over a distance of 2 kilometers.

Most companies have been researching mmWave Mobile Technology for several decades now. Interestingly, the UK's University of Surrey funded a unique project in 2012 with participation from Huawei Technologies Co., Fujitsu Ltd, Telefonica SA as well as Samsung Electronics Co., indicating the academic centers are vitally interested in the development of the future technology. The premise for most scientists working on mmWave technology was that communication over longer distances was not feasible on mobile networks.

5G Connectivity by 2020

Today, most mobile networks in Europe and the US use 4G at 800 MHz band-widths. Samsung Electronics Co., however, has adopted higher frequencies and have been successful in transmitting data over 2 kilometers.

Samsung Electronics Co. is looking to deliver 5G connectivity commercially by 2020. The South Korean company is aiming to dominate the high band-width connectivity race and is expecting to down-size Huawei Technologies Co., the Chinese electronics giant, at the earliest.

The company will be in international partnership to widen its market space as well as to create commercial products from time-to-time.

Samsung Electronics Co. is one of the most influential chaebol, the traditional family-based business organizations in South Korea. The company has come a long way in establishing itself, next only to Apple Inc., and dominates the mobile and tablet segments in the Android Operating System space.

With a plethora of high-end devices and gadgets, the company has proposed to provide higher-quality of connectivity for this range of services. With 5G quality services, Samsung Electronics Co. hopes to capture the high-end entertainment segment with 3D movies, games as well as popular streaming. The South Korean electronics giant will continue to use National Broadband Network (NBN) at speeds of 1Gbps in particular by the end of 2013. However, there is a great disappointment with Labor's fibre optic NBN with various strengths.

More important, industry analysts claim that the mobile data over networks begin to choke whenever user base is optimal. Needless to say, Samsung Electronics Co. is at the leaderboard with 5G connectivity.
