Samsung Electronics, a market leader in advanced memory technology announced the addition of two 2TB slid-state drives to its 850 Pro SSD and 850 Evo families. The up to 1TB of the Pro drive have been in the market for almost a year. And this January Samsung launched its massive 1TB SSD 850 Evo series.

The drives announced are an answer to the users search for the truly high-capacity solid-state drive. It is a major upgrade to both the drives that double their top capacity.

The features on the new drives are in the same line as their lower capacity predecessors in both families except the price range off course. The 2TB 850 Evo is $800, and the 850 Pro is $1,000.

As reported by Samsung Tomorrow,

“Samsung experienced surge in demand for 500 gigabyte (GB) and higher capacity SSDs with the introduction of our V-NAND SSDs. The release of the 2TB SSD is a strong driver into the era of multi-terabyte SSD solutions,” said Un-Soo Kim, Senior Vice President of Branded Product Marketing, Memory Business at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our ultra-high performance and large density SSD product portfolio and provide a new computing experience to users around the globe.”

According to CNET, like their predecessors the new 2TB 850 SSD PRO and EVO drives will remain in the same 7-millimeter, 2.5-inch aluminum case. Both the Pro and Evo SSDs use Samsung's 3D vertical flash memory technology. With this new technology, the memory cells are stacked up vertically up to 32 layers, allowing more cells in the same number of wafer bits. This would mean more storage space for less cost.

Both drives also support Samsung's TurboWrite. This technology helps in accelerating writing speed during data transfer by creating a high-performance write buffer.

They both feature RAPID mode that uses part of the computer's system memory (RAM) as writing cache to further improve the performance. The RAPID can be only turned on using Samsung's Magician software, which is only available for Windows. However, the drives also work with Macs.

Samsung guarantees the 2TB 850 PRO for 10 years and the 2TB 850 EVO for 5 years. Other than that, Pro drive also takes a lead from Evo drive by having marginally faster performance and double the endurance.

Samsung will further expand high capacity 3D V-NAND SSD lineups to include mSATA and M.2 form factors to address the gaming PC, laptop PC and high performance SSD markets.
