Sam Smith recently lost a significant amount of weight by working with nutritional Amelia Freer for several months. He now opens up about his intense struggle almost his whole life, admitting that food “controlled” him once.

In an interview with Australia’s 60 minutes (via Music News), Sam Smith shared that he let food controlled him while he was young. Food was his go-to whenever he felt something intense, whether at school or with his music. “When I was at school and wasn't having a great time or when music wasn't going very well. I would eat, eat. Eating would make me feel better; when I felt lonely, I would eat,” he explained.

He also shared that being called on his weight before bothered him more than the homophobic comments he would receive. The “Stay” singer is openly homesexual, sometimes even singing about his past relationships. As such, he does not think being the brunt of homosexual slurs a big deal, because he is gay and proud. Being called fat however, affected him more, because it is something he wants to change about himself.

On April 17, the singer took to his Instagram to announce that he has now four pounds away from achieving his ideal weight. The singer, obviously rejoicing the fact that his battle with his undesired weight is going to be over soon, credited his nutritionist for the achievement. He attached a picture of him apparently enjoying the mean feat, with a huge smile on his face.

Meanwhile, the singer is also currently in New Zealand enjoying some down time, while gearing up for his Auckland concerts. He shared some pictures of him enjoying the scenic Piha, one of the country’s most famous and beautiful beaches. One of his pictures showed him sitting atop a cliff, overlooking the calming waves. Smith captioned the pictures with how grateful he is over his career. He explained that being a musician allows him to travel and see the earth. He said there is no point living “on this earth” if one cannot actually see it. Earlier, he posted a message stating how he fallen in love with the country even before he landed.
