Nathan Paterson has been called many things, including being a bogan, redneck and racist, after he was spotted at the Reclaim Australia rally during the weekend. The heavily-tattooed NSW man caught on social media became a sensation but for all the wrong things.

There have been countless images that surfaced from last weekend's Reclaim Australia rallies. However, from all of these, a photo of a man roaring with arms raised prevailed. The photo was of Paterson. The image showed him sporting a singlet with the Eureka Flag and a cape possibly from the Australian flag. Since the photo emerged, Paterson was widely condemned.

"I’ve seen people calling me a bogan, calling me a racist pig, all off one photo. A woman on the radio called me a toothless, tattooed freak," he told FairFax Media (via Sydney Morning Herald).

"Well okay, great, if she wants to pay for me to get my tooth fixed then that’s great, I’ll shake her hand, because I’m in the waiting line to have it done."

According to Paterson, he attended that rally because he was frustrated that he cannot secure permanent government-funded housing. He also discussed his racial and political thoughts.

"At the rally I was chanting 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi,' which is something every Australian chants at sporting matches against other countries, so is every Australian a racist now?" he argued. To support his claim that he is not racist, Paterson said that he is also friends with the Bangladeshi owner of the local kebab he goes to constantly.

It was Paterson's first time to join the Reclaim Australia rally. Nonetheless, John Oliver, Newcastle's chief Reclaim Australia organiser, said that "he isn't representative of the vast majority of Reclaim supporters who are ordinary mums and dads." This is even though Paterson was part of the group's support base.
