Rafael Nadal’s new smart tennis racket at the 2015 Australian Open is gaining popularity because of a little tweak in its design. Nadal’s racket, which is considered one of the greatest innovations in tennis now, has a power button. Let’s get to know more about this revolutionary piece of equipment.

The smart tennis racquet is made by French company Babolat, which has also designed rackets for other tennis stars including Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Julien Benneteau, Caroline Wozniacki, Eugenie Bouchard and Agnieszka Radwanska. The company has already produced over a dozen of rackets in an effort to improve a player’s performance.

Nadal’s racket, the Play Aero Pro Drive, has sensors installed to record technical data every time that the Spanish tennis ace strikes the ball. The data obtained either after a professional match or a training session can then be downloaded to a computer or smartphone for further analysis.

“With this particular version, the player can track shot power, the ball’s impact location on the stringbed, the number and type of strokes along with a host of other elements,” said the product’s description on Tennis Warehouse. “On court the Play version of the AeroPro Drive handles like a finely tuned machine, one that delivers near effortless targeting on the biggest strokes.”

Nadal has already used the latest version of the Play Aero Pro Drive in his first round match, which he won, 6-3 6-2 6-2, against Mikhail Youhzny on Jan. 18. Having endorsed several generations of the racket, Nadal said that the most recent version is no different than the last one. He said that the racket helps him monitor his performance on the tennis court. With the Play Aero Pro Drive, Nadal knows how much effort he needs to exert in his forehands and backhands to play well.

There isn’t any extraordinary design in the racket, except for the built-in sensors that can be turned on via the power button found on the base. It still looks like an ordinary tennis racket. Babolat’s Head of Communication Thomas Otton told Fairfax Media that they want to deliver innovation without compromising the weight of the racket, adding that players do not really want a change in their grip.

Play Aero Pro Drive is available for pre-sale online at $349 at Tennis Warehouse. It will in stock on Jan. 27.
