If latest reports are to be believed, PlayStation 4 sales have crossed 6.2 million in the holiday season, taking global sales of the PS4 systems to 53.4 million, as of Jan. 1, 2017. The PS4 gaming console launched in 2013. Moreover, during the holiday season, Sony sold around 50.4 million PS4 games in retail outlets as well as digitally. As of Dec. 21, 2016, “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” solely sold 8.7 million copies, including those sold in the “Uncharted 4” PS4 Slim bundle.

Sony had announced early December that combined sale of PS4 base model, PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim had crosses 50 million units. Sony Interactive Entertainment president Andrew House is overwhelmed by the numbers and has thanked fans and partners worldwide for the stupendous support. He stated that this holiday season is one of the company’s best in history.

“We will aim to continue the momentum this year by broadening the PS4 title portfolio, further enriching the revolutionary gaming experiences on PlayStation VR and high quality gaming experience on PlayStation 4 Pro, while also expanding network services. We will remain steadfast in making the PS4 the best place to play,” House said in a statement, reported GameSpot.

Of course PS4 has a lot to do if it wants to catch up with PS3 sales that has sold more than 80 million units. One thing that helped Sony boost PS4 sales was offering the console for US$250 (AU$340) in December 2016. The temporary price cut boosted sales significantly. Sony wants to make the most of this period. Hence, six games are being offered this month, out of which, four can be played on PS4.

The latest PS4 games have been released for free as part of PlayStation Plus January 2017. They are also available for download. The games are “This War of Mine: The Little Ones” (PS4), “Day of the Tentacle Remastered” (PS4, PS Vita), “Titan Souls” (PS Vita, PS4) and “The Swindle” (PS3, PS4, PS Vita), reports Express.
