Two pit bull terriers attacked on Tuesday a 19-year-old male from East Hills, Sydney. The victim was walking his pet dog along Lean Street when he was attacked by the two American Staffordshire bull terriers.

After he fell to the ground while trying to protect his pet, the animals attacked his legs and bit off his left ear. The attacker dogs ran away when local residents from Lean Road ran to help the teenager, according to Inspector Dave Firth from Bankstown Local Area Command.

The victim was rushed to Liverpool Hospital and is in a stable condition. Reports said the man's ear was found and surgeons are trying to reattach the ear, which was severed by the vicious animals.

Danielle Mills from Ambulance New South Wales said the victim had puncture wounds on his left leg.

The pit bulls have been caught and the owner is helping police with their inquiries. The owner was not with the pit bulls when the attack happened, and he did not realize that the animals had escaped by scaling a colorbond fence.

City Council spokesman Paul Scott said decisions will be made later if charges would be made against the dog owner and if the animals would be euthanised.

Mr Firth said the American Staffordshire Bull Terriers were not a restricted breed nor declared a dangerous dog. However, Kristi Sexell from the Australian Veterinary Association pointed out that there are no dangerous breeds.

"All dogs are capable of biting, given the right circumstances," ABC quoted Ms Sexell.
