Chicago residents threw rocks and other objects on a pit bull to free, James Nevils III, a 5-year-old Chicago boy which was mauled on Monday night by the dog in Gresham. The victim, who was visiting the Gresham home in the 8900-block of South Carpenter Street, was rushed to the Advocate Christ Medical Center but was declared dead.

A female neighbour told ABC that she heard someone shout “He has my baby! Somebody please help me!” The woman said that when she look at the commotion, she thought there was a fight. However, when she approached the scene, she saw the dog had the Nevils by his neck and shoulder.

Another witness, Marquis Lewis, said he didn’t realise that the boy was being mauled by the pit bull which was killed by the people who came to the child’s rescue. “I thought it was just people playing. I didn’t know it was that serious,” Lewis said, quotes Pennlive.

The autopsy report said that Nevils died of multiple sharp and blunt force injuries to his head and neck. The death was considered an accident.

According to Lewis’s brother, Lamar, the owner of the dog was not at the scene when the incident happened. He only showed when the pit bull was dead and the victim was rushed to the hospital. The Chicago Police had issued a citation to the dog owner for owning a pet with expired rabies shot and not securing a licence to own an animal, reports ABC.

The victim, who was called “Pudgy” by his family, was described by his grandfather, James Nevils, as a very outgoing little boy, very loving kind and a real character like his father and himself.
