Pink’s “The Truth About Love” tour has become the focus of a custody battle. But the New Jersey Superior Court Judge quoted from “Gone With The Wind” and revisited Rock-and-roll history to arrive at the decision that the mother of a tween cannot be accused of bad parenting by just attending the concert.

Judge Lawrence R. Jones in his 37 page ruling wrote that the mother “in no shape of form exceed the boundaries of reasonable parental judgement” in attending the concert at Newark’s Prudential Centre. He noted that parents differ in their parenting styles and the court could not get involved until the child’s mental or physical well-being was compromised. According to the Rolling Stone Magazine, the father had objected to the profanity in the lyrics and the suggestive dance performances. He felt that it was not appropriate for his twelve year old.

The court ruling (via Music Times) examined the entire Rock-and-Roll history which has upset adults and noted that even the Rolling Stones’ iconic single “Satisfaction” was banned from Jersey City. He also noted that Pink’s singles like “The Great Escape” and “Perfect” had empowering lyrics which would be suitable for a pre-teen. The daughter had told the judge that she was “dying” to see the concert and the mother had reviewed the performances on YouTube. In his judgement, Jones also noted that the concert was a great bonding experience which the daughter would cherish her entire life. The judgement (via Rolling Stone magazine) said “The daughter enjoyed the night out with her mother and sharing this experience was very important for the child.” He further said that the value of the experience could not be sidelined because of suggestive themes or some cuss words.

Pink is a successful songwriter and singer and her single “So What” has been number 29 in the list of Rolling Stone’s 100 best songs of 2008. She has been vocal on women’s issues and has also spoken out against body shaming, bullying and slavery. A passionate animal rights activist and human rights crusader, Pink is considered a trail blazer artist.
