Episode 5 of Season 2 brought Black Jack (Tobias Menzies) back in front of Claire (Caitriona Balfe). After receiving the news that he is alive, the protagonist was in for another shock when she saw the dreaded villain in the flesh.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Menzies said that his character is “stimulated” and “intrigued” by Jamie (Sam Heughan). Black Jack is interested in pain and people’s thresholds for pain. Since Jamie was able to endure more pain than any man before him, Black Jack admires him.

Jamie represents something that Black Jack aspires to be, but can’t. His war time experience has turned him into a sadist and seeing an honourable man like Jamie makes Jack love him and at the same time he also feels the need to destroy him.

Meanwhile, a behind the scenes video of “Outlander” Season 2 episode 5 has been posted on Outlander TV News. The episode was written by Richard Kahan. Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore described the episode as a “big one” because of the return of Black Jack.

Kahan pointed out that the meeting of Claire and Black Jack is a huge moment in the book series by Diana Gabaldon, on which the TV series is based, and the event stands out in the minds of the readers. He explained that they are showing a different Jack in this season when compared to the one viewers saw in the first season. Executive Producer Toni Graphia added that one of the things they talked about while writing the script was that Jack can’t have the same “cat and mouse game” with the Frasers, the way he did before.

The Black Jack in “Outlander” Season 2 is different because he believes he got from Jamie what he wanted in the dungeon of Wentworth Prison. The scene also shows the “creepy” side of Black Jack that the fans love to hate, Kahan said.
