Brian Gray, the father of NRL star Aaron Gray has admitted that he feared for his son’s life after the South Sydney player was rushed to hospital last week after overdosing on painkillers.

Rabbitohs teammates Aaron Gray and Dylan Walker both underwent surgeries for different injuries earlier this month. Walker was reportedly given painkillers Oxycodone and Tramadol post-surgery and supposedly had a reaction to the medication, with a Daily Mail report claiming Gray overdosed on Oxycodone.

Paramedics rushed to Aaron’s room after one of his friends, Jake O’Sullivan, heard him vomiting and called an ambulance. Gray was completely unconscious by the time he was picked up from his home.

“They said to me, ‘We’re doing the best we can’, which makes you fear the worst. And there was nothing positive in their voices. There was a time I thought we were going to lose him, absolutely. There was plenty of urgency around the paramedics. He was unconscious when he left our place and the news wasn’t a lot better when we got to the hospital,” Brian Gray told the Daily Telegraph.

According to Rabbitohs boss John Lee, neither player was taking illegal drugs or alcohol but had simply overdosed on the medication prescribed to them post-surgery, which produces a feeling similar to being stoned or alcohol intoxication and which can be lethal in large doses.

Both players are on the road to recovery, although neither of them has been as yet investigated by the team or the NRL as to the incident.

The incident occurred in Gray’s granny flat behind his parents’ house, which he shares with his girlfriend. The pair issued an apology on Friday for the incident.

"We really appreciate everything [hospital staff] have done for us, we could not have asked for better care in the last four to five days. We would like to apologise to our family and friends for what we've put you through over the past few days as well, it hasn't been easy,” Gray said at a press conference.
