Both integrity units of Australian Football Club and National Rugby League will have separate investigations in star Karmichael Hunt’s allegations to Queensland police about widespread cocaine use at Gold Coast.

Claims of former Gold Coast Suns Hunt, who reportedly made the explosive allegations after being charged with possession of cocaine earlier this year, sent shockwaves to the club and the league on Sunday. The 28-year-old star told police of drug-use by other high-profile NRL and AFL players before pleading guilty in court on Gold Coast in March.

“The integrity unit will consider any information that may be evidence of wrongdoing by a player,” an NRL spokesman, who confirmed the allegations will be investigated, said as per Sydney Morning Herald.

Hunt, who told police he blamed the stress of switching clubs and football codes for going off the rails, provided the information in return for getting a lighter sentence with a fine of $2,500, which eventually helped salvage his new $2 million contract with Super Rugby’s Queensland Reds according to reports from 9news.com.

He also identified to the police an unnamed Kangaroos and Origin star who put him in contact with the Gold Coast drug dealer. The statement quoted that Hunt believed that he would have got the number of the dealer from the unnamed player, who was described to party every so often and dabbled with cocaine. Hunt and up to six other current and past players was identified to have used cocaine during a Mad Sunday bender on August 31 last year.

Gold Coast coach Rodney Eade, who had not been appointed at the time of the alleged drug-using, spoke of a joint Suns-AFL probe, but the league has the option of independently launching its integrity unit. Gold Coast CEO Andrew Travis strongly believed that the club have issues they need to deal with.

“As new CEO, I am demanding higher standards and making sure we hold ourselves to account when we do not deliver on those standards. I will be investigating these allegations, and will provide further advice to our supporters and members as appropriate,” Travis said in a statement according to The Age.
