Sofia Vergara’s ex-fiance has written a long, emotional piece on why frozen embryos have the right to live and why he wants to bring his embryos to term, and why Vergara objection does not matter.

He wrote that no matter how many people told him that he should put the issue to rest and move on with his life, he could not destroy “the lives” he already created or let them sit on the freezer.

In an opinion piece on New York Times, Nick Loeb argued that he has every right to have the custody over the frozen embryos that he and Vergara created. This, in spite of the fact that when they were still together, they signed a contract that said the frozen embryos they created together can only be brought to term if both of them give their consent. Now that they have broken up, and Vergara apparently does not want the embryos brought to term, Loeb wrote that the contract they signed should be voided and that he be given the custody over the embryos, citing numerous reasons.
In his piece, Loeb said that becoming a parent has been his life-long dream. He was only a year-old when his parents divorced and his father got his custody. He never had a relationship with his mother because he only saw her when he was 9 and his mother passed away when he reached 20. All these sad experiences made him want to have a complete family.
He also said that his father did not spend much time with him. As a result, he was mostly brought up by his Irish Catholic nanny, Renee. Even though his dad is Jewish and he was baptised Episcopalian, he attended Catholic masses because of his nanny. This made him have Catholic beliefs and principles.
He added that his former girlfriend had an abortion and until now, he still wonders about the child he had lost. He also mentioned being married for four years and working with a fertility specialist. But, it did not help, which has made him yearn for a family even more, considering how difficult it is to create a child. When they divorced, he was a shattered man, his dreams of a family totally destroyed.
He added that when he met Vergara in 2010, her career was about to take off and he could not pursuade her into having a child. However, six months into their relationship and after a life-changing accident, Loeb felt that he must have children already or may not have them anymore. The moment they got engaged in 2012, he began asking Vergara for babies. He said Vergara wanted to use a surrogate and he gave in. So with her eggs and his sperm, they were able to create two female embryos. Unfortunately, the first one failed, and the second was miscarried. They tried again the next year but their relationship was already on the rocks. Two more embryos were eventually created but Vergara seemed not as excited about parenthood as he was, so they broke up.
He has requested that he be allowed to bring the created embryos to term. He said that he offered to pay all the expenses but Vergara had refused. She also refused all sorts of alternatives that he proposed. Instead, her lawyer said she wants to keep the embryos frozen, indefinitely. For him, that means killing them. In his piece, Loeb urges readers to share his sentiment of being a pro-parent and save lives. He said now that his nanny has passed away and his father is 85, he would like to see his grandchildren.
Meanwhile in Vergara’s defense, her attorney said that it is understandable that she does not want to "have children with her ex,” especially since she is already engaged to actor Joe Manganiello. In an interview, she even said that she is willing to give birth again, even at her age and with an already grown up kid, as long as it would make Manganiello happy.
