In the latest in the National Hockey League, or NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers and Nick Schultz agreed to a two-year contract extension and the defenseman will get paid $2.25 million per season for according to a report from ESPN.com’s Pierre LaBrun.

The Flyers initially signed Schultz to a one-year deal in the 2014 offseason after playing for the Minnesota Wild, Edmonton Oilers and Columbus Blue Jackets in previous seasons. He was drafted in the second round or the 33rd overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft by the Wild. Schultz would have been an unrestricted free agent, or UFA, if he wasn’t signed after this season but the Flyers locked him up to a contract at least for the next two years.

Because of good play this season, the 32 year old Schultz got the pay raise after earning $1.25 million in the 2014 season. In the 2013-2014 season, he played for the Oilers and Blue Jackets for a combined 69 games but only had a total of 5 points on 5 assists. Thus far with the Flyers, the defensman has 13 points with 2 goals and 11 assists. 


The Flyers are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference of the NHL Standings with a 25-23-11 record for 61 points. They are four points off the Boston Bruins, which is has the eight and final spot in the playoff picture, at 28-21-9 with 65 points and three points off the Florida Panthers with at 26-20-12 with 64 points.

The veteran defensemen is the Wild’s franchise leaders in games played with 743 games. The Philadelphia Flyers are 20th in the league in goals per game 2.6 but gives up 2.8 goals against. They are fourth in power play percentage or 23.2 per cent but 28th in penalty kill percentage at 75.7 per cent.
