The world has been waiting for the first circular smartwatch from Samsung for quite some time now. Internally codenamed as ‘Project Orbis,’ the Gear A smartwatch runs a version of Tizen platform. It is expected to be officially announced either during IFA 2015 in Berlin or at the Samsung’s Unpacked event scheduled on Aug. 13 alongside the Galaxy Note 5.

According to SamMobile, Gear A has at least three variants – SM-R720, SM-R730 and SM-R732, which are internally referred to as Orbis S1, Orbis S2 and Orbis Classic, respectively. The exact differences among these variants are yet to be revealed. However, GSM Arena foresees it to be launched with multiple material options or connectivity differences. It was previously speculated that one version of the Gear A may come with a mobile data support along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

On July 30, during the Tizen Developer Summit in India, Samsung announced the new Tizen 2.3.1 for their Smartwatches. The new Tizen 2.3.1 has APIs that can be used to create Wearable apps. It also includes support for a rotating bezel for the round watch face of the Next Gear Smartwatch.

At the event, few specs were also confirmed. The device will sport a 1.65-inch 360x360 Super AMOLED touchscreen. The Gear A watches will be powered by Exynos 3472 chipset with a dual-core processor and 768MB of RAM. It will also sport 4GB of on board storage. Bluetooth 4.1, Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n), gyro, GPS, barometer and heart rate sensors will be present as well. The device will house a 250 mAh battery. The smartwatch’s display will have a 360×360 pixel resolution decorated with a rotating bezel ring to help with the navigation.
