Italian or even Argentinian cobblers could kiss their ambitions to be the official red shoe maker of newly minted Pope Francis. It seems the former Archbishop of Argentina, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, has made papal sartorial fashion more simple with his choice to wear his old back shoes for his own inaugural mass on Tuesday afternoon.

And definitely his old pair is not a Prada, but shoes he brought from Argentina. Although reports said that Gamarelli, the Italian tailors and cobblers, have even prepared several pairs of red shoes as well as the papal vestments for the inaugural mass, Pope Francis apparently has a different taste in shoes and other accessories compared to his predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.

For cross, he continues wearing the iron one he had been using since he became in 1992 the auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires.

The decision to shun precious things earned Pope Francis the praise of a Rome jeweller.

"The pope's decision to renounce precious things and avoid materials such as gold is very much in keeping with his desire to emphasise the religious symbols themselves, not what they are made of . . . It's not great news for us goldsmiths, but I personally think it is a potent gesture which holds a message of renewal for the Church. It's an obvious choice also for a pope who comes from a poor country," Global Post quoted jeweler Paolo Picciotti.

Claudio Franchi, who owns the studio that designed the ring of Pope Benedict XVI, agreed that "The rings can be just as symbolic if made out of less noble materials than gold, as it was during the Roman Republic."

The following chart sums up what Pope Francis decided to use in comparison to the retired pope emeritus's choice.

It reflects that Pope Francis is merely living the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi who had taken a vow of poverty, even shedding his own garments to prove his point.

Prior to the inaugural mass, Pope Francis also opted to set aside another branded item that Pope Benedict XVI used for barely three months - the brand new popemobile made by Mercedes Benz - in favour of an open-air jeep, indicating also that he felt protected by angels and there is no need for bulletproof glasses as shield.

Another mark of his austerity that fellow Argentineans heeded was the relatively small delegation from his native land after he told his countrymen not to spend fare and hotel money for his inaugural mass but to donate instead the funds saved to the poor. Only 19 Argentineans, led by President Cristina Kirchner attended the historic event.

His emphasis on a missionary church, which contrasted with the pompous lifestyle that many church leaders live, was reflected in one statement in his Saturday audience with journalists that he would "like a church that is poor and for the poor."

For his ceremonial robes, Paolo Serpone from Naples, who designed the ceremonial vestments used the vineyard as main theme since it is a symbol of life and resurrection and placed it on inexpensive materials.

"These robes may be simple and inexpensive but you do not need riches to celebrate a new beginning," Mr Serpone said.
